Dragons are common in the backwater kingdom of Bellemontagne, coming in sizes from mouse-like vermin all the way up to castle-smashing monsters. Gaius Aurelius Constantine Heliogabalus Thrax (who would much rather people call him Robert) has recently inherited his deceased dad’s dead job as a dragon catcher/exterminator, a career he detests with all his heart in part because he likes dragons, feeling a kinship with them, but mainly because his dream has always been the impossible one of transcending his humble origin to someday become a prince’s valet. Needless to say, fate has something rather different in mind…

Why we chose this: Robert would rather be a prince's valet than a dragon exterminator, he actually likes dragons and feels a kinship with them, and fate has something rather different in mind for him than the quiet, dignified life he has been dreaming of. Kraken carries the weathered, slightly reluctant adventurousness of a story about someone being pulled toward a destiny they did not choose and discovering it suits them better than expected, the scent of driftwood and leather and the particular atmosphere of a journey that keeps going in directions nobody planned. Light this candle as Robert sets off on the first of what will be many unwanted dragon-related incidents, and let the open-air depth fill the room like a backwater kingdom where the dragons are everywhere and the most interesting person is the one who would rather be doing something else entirely.
